Most sewing machine threads can be used for embroidery. Threads designed for hand embroidery will usually not work. Some of the heavier threads may require a special needle, with a larger eye, such as a top stitch needle. You also need be careful what designs you choose when using a heavier thread. The quilting outline type are great. A heavy, solid fill type would not look good.
